House and Senate conference members released a defense policy bill tonight that would establish a Space Force as a separate military service with Title 10 authority. The new service would be led by a chief of staff for space operations and a Senate-confirmed assistant Air Force secretary for space acquisition and integration who would oversee the space architecture, including the Space and Missile Systems Center and the Space Development Agency. "The [National Defense Authorization Act] provides the secretary of the Air Force with the authority to transfer Air Force personnel to the newly established Space Force,'' the conference report summary states.
