DOD seeks new space-based interceptor effort in FY-20

The Defense Department is seeking $15 million in fiscal year 2020 to begin work on a space-based interceptor that could destroy an enemy ballistic missile during the boost phase of flight. Included in the request is the development of a "reference architecture" for such a weapon as well as developing an independent cost estimate, technical risk assessment, development time line and review of potential countermeasures. The new Space Development Agency is seeking the funding as part of a larger $85 million request to finance space technology development and prototypes that includes five different projects.
