Crude oil production includes three different stages of recovery; primary, secondary, and tertiary (called also enhanced oil recovery or EOR). During the primary recovery stage, the natural reservoir pressure and artificial lifts techniques enable the operators to bring up to the surface around 10% of a reservoir's original oil in place (OOIP). Hence, there was a need to improve the output rate to extend the productive life of oilfields. The most widely used technique involved in improving oil production was water injection. However, conventional primary and secondary recovery operations typically leave behind two-thirds of OOIP.
