Low-Level and Long-Term Exposure Effects of Air Pollution on Pulmonary Diseases

The chances of contracting severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are high when subjected to long-term exposure of low-level air pollutioa So far no study has been conducted on long term air pollution exposure to the development or progression of the disease. However, a recent study observed increased risk of severe COPD when exposed to low-level air pollution. Addressing the challenge, researchers from the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology of the Danish Cancer Society in Copenhagen, headed by postdoctoral fellow Zorana Andersen, have discovered the consequences of long-term exposure to low-level air pollution effects on COPD. For this research study, the team made use of data from the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health Study, consisting more than 57,000 individuals between the ages of 50 and 64 living in Copenhagen or Aarhus, the first and second largest cities in Denmark, between the time frame of 1993 and 1997.
