LONG-RANGE EFFECTS IN COMPOSITE METALLIC TARGETS ION-IRRADIATED WITH LOW DOSES

摘要

The effect of ion bombardment on the microhardness of copper and Permalloy foils, brought in contact or shielded by another foil separated by a vacuum gap, was investigated. The irradation effect was found to extend across the boundaries between foils and to be stronger for stacked foils in comparison with foils irradiated separately. When a stack of dissimilar metals is irradiated ,the energy threshold of long-range effects (approx. 30 keV) is the same for Cu and Al shields and coincides with that for an individual foil. The long range effect can also be transmitted across a gap between foils, presumably owing to the emission of particles induced by deformation waves. The role of hydrogen transport in long ra ng effects is examined . The generation of deformation waves and their interactions with native defects are expected to be the most probable mechanisms of long-range effects.
