Bipolar affective disorder

Bipolar affective disorder is a serious psychiatric condition characterized by episodes of elevated and depressed mood. Incidence peaks between the ages of 25 and 30 years and it has a lifetime prevalence of 1.3%. Bipolar disorder has significant morbidity and mortality, but early detection and good multidisciplinary management can reduce the impact of the disease. It is important that a GP can recognize the disorder, refer appropriately and provide good community care.
