Manufacturers of large-sized LCDs want to conquer the television market, but this conquest will require extremely large and constant infusions of capital, rapid technological advances, and aggressive cost cutting. Manufacturers of large-sized liquid-crystal-display (LCD) panels aspire to conquer the television market. Their resources include untold billions of dollars; their ambition is the domination of the massive worldwide television business; and their challenges include seemingly unlimited financial risks, a wide variety of competing technologies, and technical and pricing hurdles. But do they really have what it takes to ride this third wave of LCD demand? Despite their seemingly limitless assets and determination, the drive of panel makers to dislodge the cathode-ray-tube (CRT), plasma-display-panel (PDP), and microdisplay-based rear-projection TV segments as the primary displays in the television market faces numerous obstacles that must be overcome.
