STRAY THOUGHTS

Lovers of the old style of library (a place for silent study, where the librarians enforce strict discipline) sometimes get annoyed when it is suggested that there are other ways to use the library's space. Of course the first question is 'Has the library got any space that isn't filled with bookshelves and, possibly, computer workstations?' If there isn't any space available there isn't much to be done other than campaign to get some. However, even the poorest libraries usually have a little space: maybe a reading area that is available after the library is closed, a veranda or shady area outside, or sometimes an actual meeting room.
