摘要

For any old-line manufacturing executive who thinks he will swirl into the new economy as easily as a debutante swirls into a ballroom, American Greetings Corp. offers a warning: E-business is not for the fainthearted. AmericanGreetings.com, the online subsidiary of the $2.1 billion Cleveland manufacturer and seller of greeting cards, is grappling with its third business model, executive turnover, a twice-postponed initial public offering, and layoffs. And things could get worse, thanks to a major restructuring announced in November. American Greetings joined the dot.com party early. It began to create an e-business strategy when other pioneers, such as Dell Computer Corp. and Cisco Systems Inc., were investing in Internet- technology to improve efficiency and boost business in the mid-1990s.
