The elevator doorsrnare about to close, but two men interrupt their conversation in Spanish-one speaking in the courtly tones of Madrid, the other speaking a South American dialect-to ask its occupants, in French, to hold the elevator. Once inside the box that rises and falls, they resume their spirited conversation, reverting to the language that comes most naturally to them.
