About 90 percent of the soil is made up of sand, silt or clay and the remaining constitutes the organic matter, which has tremendous influence on the soil's ability to support plant growth and crop productivity. Organic matter has the vast array of carbon compounds originally created by plants, microbes, and other organisms present in the soil. These compounds play different roles in nutrition, water and biological cycles. Almost all lives found in soil are dependent on this organic matter for their energy and nutrients. In other words, Soil Organic Matter (SOM) is important for successful farming.
