Giant African Snail noticed infesting mulberry gardens in Tamil Nadu

Till recently, causes of the infestation of mulberry gardens by G.A.S. has been reported from different parts of Karnataka. Now, they are found infesting mulberry gardens in parts of Tamil Nadu, especially Hosur and Tirupattur Sericultural belt. In one of the mulberry gardens, the damage was severe. Though this pest is considered to be a rare visitor causing less damage to mulberry, on severity it is a threat. Marshy places are very conducive for their survival and multiplication. It is very active during rainy season. Incidence is more from October to December. Untimely drizzling coupled with few heavy down pour for two to three days due to Thane cyclonic storm, foggy morning, unusual cloudy days resulted in its outbreak.
