Antibacterial activity of Chaetomorpha litorea (harvey) against isolated fish bacteria

In the present study the methanolic extract of Chaetomorpha litorea (Harvey) was screened for antibacterial activity against the bacterial strains isolated from fish. Antibacterial effect of C. litorea was studied by Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) method. Result of MIC showed that the methanolic extract of Chaetomorpha litorea expressed its antibacterial activity against isolated fish bacterial strains at lower concentration (50 to 1.562 mu g/ml). In order to identify the active principle rendering the antibacterial effect of Chaetomorpha litorea, the preliminary phytochemical screening, HPLC and FT-IR analysis were done. HPLC spectrum showed 19 peaks (1 major and 18 minor), indicating the presence of nineteen components and the FT-IR spectrum indicates the presence of compound with OH and C-H group.
