To achieve a behavioral goal in a complex environment such as problem solving situations, we must plan multiple steps of action. In general, problem solving involves four temporally distinct phases of the executive function: Goal setting, Planning, Execution, and Evaluation. To investigate the involvement of the lateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) in problem solving, we designed a path-finding task in which monkeys were required to plan multi-step of actions to reach a final goal. This paper will cover neuronal representation of behavioral goals, goal sub-goal transformation, action planning, and evaluation of outcomes of actions. Our data suggest that the PFC is involved in each phase of problem solving by encoding abstract forms to represent task-relevant information to cope with various task demands.%ヒトおよび動物ほ、環境の中で動的に外界と相互作用を行いながら生活している。
