Met Office relocated without significant interruption to meteorological services

The Met Office headquarters and operations centre in the United Kingdom, including one of two world area forecast centres, has been relocated to a new state-of-the-art facility - a major undertaking that required both commitment and determination. THE World Area Forecast Centre (WAFC) London production facilities run by the Met Office in the United Kingdom have recently relocated from Bracknell to a new state-of-the-art building at Exeter, some 240 kilometres distant. The relocation of the Met Office headquarters and operations centre was a massive undertaking, and one of the biggest telecommuni-cations moves to occur in Europe for some years. Initial studies began in September 1999, with the move into the new complex completed on schedule early in 2004. The total net cost of the relocation was about £100 million (U.S. $177.6 million). Services to customers - many operated on round-the-clock basis - were maintained without any significant interruption throughout the period of the move.
