A Critique on Stock Verification in Libraries

摘要

The paper analyses the relevant provisions of the General Financial Rules of Government of India and suggests some measures for curtailing mutilation or theft of library materials. The paper also stresses that stock verification is secondary in comparison to the larger interests of providing effective services in a modern library. The increasing emphasis put on electronic access made it possible for books and journals to be accessed in electronic form may leave mutilationAheft of resources a non-issue. It is time for Government and Institutional heads to make suitable amends in the stock verification rules without jeopardizing the service ideals of a library. There must be concerted efforts from library professionals and professional associations to get the punitive clauses amended at the earliest for improving the collection access and information services in libraries.
