Thailand Establishes Network for Connected Government

The Ministry of ICT in Thailand has announced plans to establish a government information network infrastructure to connect more than 1,000 government offices and agencies across the country. The eGovernment Agency (eGA) is planning to rent network infrastructure to have all government agencies covered by the Government Information Network GIN within 4 years. GITS Director Sak Segkhoonthod announced the eGA will provide common applications such as video conferencing and data back-up on a national broadband network to lessen the difficulty of information sharing among government organizations. He indicated the eGA will set up a common e-mail service for e-Government agencies and their staff supply8ing applications as a service to the public via cloud computing. The agency will also be responsible for establishing IT standards and providing consulting services on e-Government to all government agencies. It also plans to provide the districts and communities around the country access to the GIN in order to address the digital divide in metropolitan and remote areas. The budget of the agency is $55 million.
