Who says you have to provide your people paid sick leave? For now, nobody, unless you're in San Francisco or Washington, D.C. But a new nationwide survey shows that 86% of 1,493 randomly chosen workers think employers should be required by law to give paid sick leave. This news is likely to lend further momentum to various legislative efforts to force employers' hands. Congress is considering the Healthy Families Act (HFA), mandating seven days of paid leave a year for firms with 15 employees and up. Also, a dozen states weighed similar legislation this year. (San Francisco and Washington have city ordinances requiring such leave.) The survey sponsor, the Public Welfare Foundation, says over 40% of private sector employees lack paid sick days.
