摘要

In this introduction, we present the rationale behind this special issue, the key developments in Indian HRM; offer suggestions for future research; and summarize the papers in this issue. There are at least three compelling reasons for doing this special issue. First, rapid developments in the Indian economy after its liberalization in 1991 have prompted institutions such as the World Bank to forecast that India will become the world's fourth largest economy by 2020. As a result, a large number of foreign operators have now entered the Indian market, thus driving the need for the top managers of these organizations to learn about the nature of HR systems appropriate for the Indian context.
