Lost in Translation: Cultural Hybridity, Acculturation, and Human Development Commentary on de Haan

Mariette de Haan [this issue] used the concept of 'cultural translation' to critique current models of acculturation. She argued that current conceptualizations of acculturation theory, particularly in cross-cultural psychology, do not capture the cultural transformations in immigrant identities that are colliding with each other. The cultural translation model used by de Haan specifically examined the incompatibilities and conflicts that have surfaced between child rearing practices of the Dutch middle class and the predominantly Muslim immigrant families. De Haan argued that the traditional, disciplinary, authority-oriented parenting practices of migrants, primarily influenced by Islam, clash with the Dutch parenting practices that typically emphasize autonomy, freedom, and independence.
