National Law Center Calls For Pressure on U.S. to Implement International Housing Rights Law

The National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty (NLCHP) called for a public education campaign to pressure all levels of government in the United States to comply with international treaties that recognize the right to housing as a human right, during its May 5 housing rights forum. The United States has ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and is a signatory on the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, and all of these documents cite the right of everyone to adequate housing, said Myra Gomez of the Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions (COHRE), which cosponsored the forum with the NLCHR Maria Foscarinis, NLCHP president and executive director, said she reported to the Organization of American States (OAS) in March that the United States has failed to live up to its obligations under international law to provide enough resources to ensure adequate housing for all people.
