California Develops Computer Model For Calculation of Utility Allowances

California has developed a computer model to calculate utility allowances for low-income housing tax credit and other affordable housing projects with solar energy improvements. The California utility allowance calculator (CUAC) is the product of an advisory committee formed by the California Energy Commission (CEC) to promote the use of solar power in affordable housing as part of the state's $3.3 billion, 10-year new solar homes partnership initiative. CUAC has been undergoing testing throughout 2008, and it is now ready for public use, according to CEC. The California Tax Credit Allocation Committee (TCAC) is expected to adopt the CUAC as its energy consumption model software in early 2009, according to Sandy Miller, the CUAC project manager.
