Housing Starts Fall to Lowest Level in More Than 17 Years

Housing starts sank to their lowest level in over 17 years in July, a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 965,000 units. July starts were the lowest since May 1991, when the starts rate was 921,000. The July rate was down 11.0 percent from 1.084 million in June, when the statistics were distorted by changes in the New York City building code. The single-family sector continued its long slide, with the starts rate declining from 660,000 in June to 641,000 in July. Single-family starts haven't been that low since January 1991, when the rate was 604,000.
