Housing Starts Fall to Lowest Level of Year in October

Housing starts fell to their lowest level of the year in October, a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 519,000 units. The October starts rate was 11.7 percent below the September rate of 588,000. The single-family starts rate dipped 1.1 percent, from 441,000 to 436,000 units, and the multifamily rate fell 43.5 percent, from 147,000 to 83,000 units. The 10-month starts total rose from 475,000 units in 2009 to 510,500 units this year. Single-family starts increased from 379,900 to 411,600 units, and multifamily starts were up from 95,100 to 98,800 units.
