The federal government should take "immediate action" to protect tenants facing eviction because of mortgage foreclosures, according to a report by the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty (NCLHP) and the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC). "Many tenants, even those who may be current in their rent payments and in full compliance with their lease terms, face an increased risk of housing loss as a direct consequence of foreclosure proceedings, collateral consequences of such proceedings, or through subsequent possessory actions commenced by new owners," the report says. To get a clearer picture on the status under state law of renters in foreclosure, the NLCHP, in collaboration with the NLIHC, conducted a survey of the laws in all states and the District of Columbia.
