Housing Starts Jump in January Because of Multifamily Increase

Housing starts jumped to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 596,000 units in January, up 14.6 percent from the December rate of 520,000, because of a sharp increase in the multifamily sector. The multifamily starts rate rose 77.7 percent, from 103,000 to 183,000 units, while the single-family rate dipped 1.0 percent, from 417,000 to 413,000 units. Building permits, an indicator of future construction, were down in January, with the seasonally adjusted annual permit rate dropping 10.4 percent, from 627,000 to 562,000 units.
