Multifamily Increase Spurs Jump In Housing Starts in September

Housing starts jumped 15.0 percent in September, due primarily to a big increase in the volatile multifamily sector. The seasonally adjusted annual starts rate was 658,000 units, compared with a rate of 572,000 units in August. The single-family rate rose 1.7 percent, from 418,000 to 425,000 units, while the multifamily rate was up 51.3 percent, from 154,000 to 233,000 units. The nine-month starts total dipped from 467,100 units in 2010 to 459,900 units this year. Single-family starts dropped from 375,600 to 330,300 units, but multifamily starts increased from 91,500 to 129,700 units.
