Minimum Rent Provisions in Draft Voucher Reform Bill Could Hurt Low-Income Families, CBPP Says

The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) says an increase in minimum public housing and Section 8 rents in Section 8 voucher reform legislation drafted by House housing subcommittee chair Judy Biggert (R-Ill.) could mean annual rent increases of $300 or more for some of the lowest-income families. Based on an analysis of HUD data, CBPP concluded that nearly 685,000 households could be subject to a rent increase, and it said Congress should delete the minimum rent provision from the bill.
