Recruiting for first-time general managers as well as other property-level management positions is increasingly challenging for hotel companies. The job responsibilities, especially for GMs, continue to expand and become more complex. Hotel companies and recruitment consultants say a solid understanding of profit and loss management, experience in different segments on different continents and at least one post-secondary degree in hospitality management or business administration are essential for first-time candidates. In a sea change from the previous generation, backgrounds in food and beverage or operations are becoming less important than revenue management and sales and marketing for GMs.
