NNSA PROGRAM TO DETECT RADIATION FROM THE AIR BEGINS IN CHICAGO

A National Nuclear Security Administration radiation detection program criticized by the Government Accountability Office for its lack of use began pilot testing in Chicago late last month, NNSA officials said. The pilot program, sponsored in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security's Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, utilizes the NNSA's Aerial Measuring System to detect radiation sources from the air. The technology has only been previously used in New York and the GAO criticized the Department of Energy and DHS for not making the technology more readily available in a 2006 report.
