Water soluble chelates were formed by reacting copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, chromium and rare earth oxides, hydroxides and carbonates with carboxylic acids, natural and synthetic amino acids, hydroxy acids, peptides, acetylacetone and sodium tripolyphosphate. The ligands were selected to give either electrically neutral or negatively charged metal complexes in order to minimise the coordinate bonding between the metal chelate and the timber substrate. Eighteen of the 38 chemlates prepared were found to be effective fungicides, which readily diffused through the heartwood of high density eucalypt construction timbers.
