Preservation is better than cure

The furore that greeted the findings of the recent Audit Commission report into the deteriorating condition of the local road network in England could have been avoided if highway authorities had the vision to realise that prevention, or in this case, preservation is better than cure. The report, 'Going the Distance - Achieving Better value for Money in Road Maintenance', found that the 236,000 miles of local roads in England are deteriorating significantly as the cost of repairs has risen by 50 per cent over the last decade.
