Highway safety in a 'post-truth' world

There is no doubt that history is going to view 2016 as a turning point. The UK referendum on EU membership and the US election campaign were just two world events that turned the world on its head and generated additions to our language. "Brexit", "basket of deplorables" and "JAM" (just about managing) immediately spring to mind, but the word of the year (chosen by the Oxford University Press) was "post-truth". This, according to the OUP, means "relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief". So what does this mean for highways safety?
