In a world driven by digital and ever higher sampling rates it's good to know that the genesis of analogue is alive and kicking. Wax cylinders, the earliest recording format and once an industry standard for over 35 years, are still in use, with a healthy number of enthusiasts, including a record company in Sheffield, dedicated to recording the old fashioned way. And it's not just new music that is being committed to wax; the fact that the technical know-how is not being allowed to die means rediscovered original wax cylinders can be played and copied and so be preserved for posterity.
