I found your investigation into hearing by Dr Doug Mahar to be illuminating and disturbing at the same time [see HFN Jan ' 12]. I was completely unaware that some anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics could damage one's hearing in certain circumstances and shall now pay attention if ever I am prescribed them. Dr Mahar is able to write such an authoritative article because it is based on the work of scientists who have applied the scientific method to prove that certain drugs have adverse side effects. The hi-fi world cannot claim any such authority as it is unable, or unwilling, to conduct tests on equipment according to the scientific.
