A powerful account of the opening symphonic poem suggests an exceptional Sibelius concert (2008) and indeed you won't find a finer account of the Fifth Symphony (Karajan/DG and Davis/LSO Live notwithstanding). Saraste and the LPO bring a profound sense of inevitability to this music, right up to the tricky timing of the monolithic final chords. Earlier that year they had played the Lutoslawski: the piece starts with a faint whiff of The Miraculous Mandarin but this 1954 Concerto for Orchestra has never gained the popularity of Bartok's.
