Dipping arbitrarily into (Ⅲ) from the G minor symphony I seemed to be back in Chailly-land [HFN March '12]- fast tempi, strong accents, but very clean execution. Abbado doesn't bring Furtwangler's (almost unique) turbulence to the opening movement of No.40: the very opposite in fact. And this is a disappointment. Like Britten with the ECO in 1968 he observes every repeat. No.39 too has both half repeats in the finale and there the music outstayed its welcome for me. However, the exceptional standard of preparation and playing, and live recording (back in 2008/9) with good presence, make this an important disc.
