Oddly enough, this masterpiece wasn't exactly raved about when released in 1969, but then a number of classics have been 'slow burns' - it now figures in so many All-Time Greatest LP lists that you'd think it charted in the Top 10. More surprising still is that its standout track, 'Son Of A Preacher Man', didn't hit No.1. Be that as it may, this LP proved definitively that Ms Springfield ranks right up there with Aretha Franklin, Etta James and other soul/ R&B queens of the post-WWII era. Memphis and its studio denizens provided a natural milieu for Dusty, though she finished her vocals in New York. This edition is the finest I've ever heard, so, Chad, how about Howard Tate's Verve LP for the next in the series?
