As part of the Chicago to St Louis High Speed Rail Corridor project, one critical bridge replacement was over 9~(th) Street in Springfield, IL. The existing 4 span ballasted thru-plate girder structure had become structurally deficient to support the upgraded service in this corridor. Due to the highly skewed alignment relative to the roadway, clearance requirements, and planned future street widening, a single track 188'-0" span (out to out of steel) Thru-plate Girder (TPG) span on skewed abutments was selected. The new span is designed to current AREMA E80 loading standards. Selection of a long span TPG eliminated the center pier between existing traffic lanes and allows for street widening and sidewalk upgrades by the community in the future. Fabrication of the TPG span occurred in El Centra, CA and Coolidge, AZ. Components were trucked 1500 miles to Springfield in individual girder segments up to a maximum 109' length and weighing up to 78 tons each. Total weight of the steel span is 943,000 pounds. Due to schedule constraints, only partial fit-up of the span's 35'-40' skewed end sections were performed in Arizona. With excellent coordination between Union Pacific Railroad, local contractor (Halverson Construction), the fabricator (Stinger Bridge & Iron/ EW Corporation), and HDR Engineering, the demolition, final erection and roll-in of this new span was completed in less than two weeks and placed in service October 2015.
