The main motive for making digital file copies of your analogue tapes, LPs, etc, is sheer convenience. Once they are organised on hard disc you can put the original recordings away, keep them safe while still being able to quickly find and play the music you fancy hearing. An added benefit is that it becomes an excellent excuse er, reason, to listen again to old recordings that 'fell behind the sofa' in memory terms. The process can become a voyage of (re-)discovery. From an engineering point of view, old recording equipment was probably less capable than today's. But there was also more of a focus on a cleaner and simpler approach to recording. And some old home hi-fi equipment performed wonderfully well. Indeed, using the same replay equipment that you used in past years may be an important part of the sound you want to enjoy.
