Sony STR-6055 receiver

Sony's entrance into the world of high performance solid-state amplification had been a stunning one. The TA-1120 [HFN Sep '13] was an astonishingly complete package but the mid-1960s technology on which it was based was quickly superseded. New types of transistor soon made it possible to couple a loudspeaker load directly to the amp's output stage, which meant there were no capacitors (as with the TA-1120) or transformers to get in the way. DC coupling, as the technique was called, finally allowed the construction of amplifiers whose performance was consistent throughout (and beyond) the audible spectrum. Sony's first serious receiver, the STR-6060, was launched in 1967 and was soon followed by a multitude of similar units as the concept of a combined integrated amplifier and stereo tuner gained traction. Typical of these, the midrange STR-6055 seen here, first appeared in 1971.
