SONY STR-6055 (Vintage)

Rated at a modest 40W/8ohm or 2×30W/8ohm, Sony's substantial STR-6055 receiver mustered closer to 2×48W/8ohm and 2×65W/4ohm on the test bench. Claims of 100W/8ohm and 145W/4ohm in the service manual for its IHF dynamic power output are slightly ambitious, however, as I obtained some 62W, 101W, 120W and 110W into 8,4, 2 and 1ohm loads under very similar transient conditions [see Graph 1, below]. Distortion, rated at ＜0.1 -0.2% from 1-40W in the same manual, is more reflective of its performance as the STR-6055 incurred 0.0054%/1W, 0.004%/10Wand 0.0195K/40Wat 1kHz/8ohm. Distortion necessarily increases slightly at very high and, here, low frequencies to 0.09%/20kHz and 0.02%/20Hz at 10W/8ohm [see Graph 2, below].
