ABSL Space Products (ABSL) has extensively used Sony Corporation's 18650 hard carbon cells in the manufacturing of its space flight battery systems. Due to changes in safety regulations by the Japanese government to include Lithium Ion battery cells in the DENAN safety regulation, Sony Corporation has added a mandrel component to the 18650 hard carbon designs. This resulted in several mechanical design changes to the 18650 hard carbon cells. Sony has since begun production on the 18650 hard carbon mandrel cell as a direct replacement to the 18650 hard carbon cell.
