Sony D-88

Sony's D-88 was introduced in 1988 as the smallest (portable) CD player in the world - a feat of engineering from the early days of the format that remained largely unequalled. The introduction of 8cm CD singles in the late '80s had brought with it the possibility of a range of smaller players. But with typical flair, Sony engineered the D-88 so that it could play full-sized ones too. For this, the entire spindle motor assembly slid out towards the front right-hand corner of the player, moving the clamping puck as well.
