Announced in 1988, the Sony D-88 was at the time of its introduction the smallest CD player in the world. Although slimmer machines were produced subsequently, the D-88's tiny footprint and minimal overall volume would never be challenged by other designs intended to rob it of the title of 'world's smallest'. This feat of engineering from the early days of the format was, in its own way, unequalled.
