Think of the first generation of CD players to hit the market and chances are that you will picture heavily built behemoths festooned with flashing lights and glittering with chintzy trim. While this is certainly a fair description of some of the early machines, not all were like that. In fact, Sony's CDP-101 [see HFN Jan '12]-the first ever CD player available to consumers - was positively restrained by Japanese standards and its cosmetics were soon copied by just about every rival manufacturer.
