Sound Off!

The letter from Mr Timmerman [HFN Nov '19] in which he recalled the Hi-Fi News CD compilation All-Time Greats! and the replies to it from Ken Kessler and Steve Harris left me wondering. Which tracks would both readers and reviewers choose to put on such a disc these days? And by what criteria would you select them? Would you choose simply by recording quality (despite the track not having any musicality, eg, it being a test track), or would it have a toe-tapping quality or other qualities that stir the emotions? How about familiarity of the artist, or even the piece of music - the 'I know that music, let's see how this version sounds (be it a remaster, remix, or cover version)' syndrome. Also, would you avoid certain genres, such as rap or death metal? Would enough HFN readers be interested in either of these types of music?
