Having followed high-end hi-fi for around SO years, I found myself in total agreement with Ken Kessler when he wrote in his January Opinion column that due to its 'having created more hi-fi concepts than any other', the most important brand in the history of hi-fi is Acoustic Research. After leaving college in the US, my good friend, who had graduated in electrical engineering, bought a pair of AR-2 loudspeakers, the AR amp, AR tuner and AR turntable. I will never forget the full, accurate sound. Then, in the early 70s, I attended a hi-fi show at the Olympia London and low and behold, there was Acoustic Research with its full lineup, including the mighty LST speaker plus its smaller AR-3a, AR-2ax, AR-6 and AR-7 models. The company was using Crown and Phase Linear amps and played a wide range of recordings through the equipment in order to show its strengths and weaknesses.
