'Chaotic and dangerous' loading system ends in fatal crush of forklift truck driver

AarhusKarlshamn UK (AAK UK), a food manufacturer, has been fined £140,000 after a forklift truck driver was killed at its factory in Runcorn. On 18 April 2011, an AAK UK employee, Michael Moran, was in his forklift truck loading pallets of mayonnaise tubs onto a lorry trailer outside the factory on the Astmoor Industrial Estate, where AAK UK manufactures table sauces and condiments. He had finished loading one side of the trailer and had moved onto a public road to reach the other side. As he manoeuvred the forklift truck into position, a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) that had been parked alongside the trailer started slowly to reverse. Although the HGV driver braked after Mr Moran had shouted, it was too late and the lorry reversed into the side of Mr Moran's vehicle, which overturned, killing him instantly. He was 49 years old.
