IN GRAMMAR SCHOOL, I WAS COMPLETELY mesmerized by Charles Dickens' famous opening lines of ambivalence in A Tale of Two Cities: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.. ." On the surface contradictory, the sentiment he expressed rang so true it seemed almost instinctive.
